COURSE OBJECTIVES
The general objective of the course is to provide students with a solid grasp of the tools and perspectives of European Union’s strategies & policies on security and economy today; and also to enhance their capability for understanding the vision of EU for the future in terms of security, economy and transatlantic relationship. Regarding this general objective, the course will have three modules and related specific objectives with each module.
- Module one aims to provide the historical background and basic knowledge of European integration and Euro-Atlantic security structures; as well as current economic dimensions and foreign and security policy of the EU.
- Module two aims to provide a better understanding about the international security environment in terms of global/regional/economic challenges and EU’s recent and different policy implementations in security and economy with a holistic approach: EU’s positioning in new security threats and EU’s strategies on new enlargement process, its economic and political impact, financial stability challenges, economic governance in the EU etc.
- Module three, having the background of first two modules that focused on the historical and current experiences, aims to provide students to develop an analytical approach to consider the possible threats & opportunities in the future of EU.
KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to;
- Comment on the current discussions on European security & defence policy and its implications with a holistic approach.
- Obtain extensive knowledge on current EU economy policy priorities & challenges and analyse them in the light of the debates on the Future of EU
- To learn to look critically at past and current experiences in order to predict and analyse possible future security threats and developments.
- Distinguish between different strands of EU foreign and security policy and their relevance today.
- Develop a solid comprehension of different perceptions and approaches on international security environment and global security issues (such as border security, human security, economic security etc.) and EU’s policies & responses on these.
- Understand the importance of EU’s policy tools for taking a leading role in global economy.
- Draw out implications of EU policies and Turkey’s accordance process in security policy dimensions to EU with transatlantic ties.
- Have a deeper understanding of the EU’s capacities and limitations as a security and peace-keeping actor today
- Analyze in a critical way the EU’s policy decisions and practices on new security threats.
- Draw out knowledge of current policy and strategy agenda of EU such as multilateralism, - EU security governance, enlargement, fiscal stability etc. to identify potential opportunities for future.
- Comprehend how and why EU will shape its future in post Brexit process especially in the context of transatlantic security relations.
